Illustrative Mathematics K–5 · Grade 4 · Unit 5 · Multiplicative Comparison and Measurement
Welcome to the Zoo Crew! Line up the feeding buckets, compare the biggest animals, prep the food, weigh and time everything, and build the fences. Then feed the whole zoo at Feeding Time. Each station matches lessons from class.
Each station deals 8 fresh problems (Feeding Time deals 10). A right answer on the first try earns 10 points. After a wrong answer, the game names the likely mistake and gives one more try for 5 points. At Feeding Time, each right answer fills one of 10 food bowls.
Hints use the pictures from class: tape diagrams where “4 times as many” is 4 copies of the smaller tape, tables of units, clock faces for parts of an hour, and rectangles with their side lengths. A used hint caps that problem at 5 points.
Adding instead of multiplying (“3 times as many” as “3 more”), subtracting instead of dividing to find how many times, using 10 or 100 for the units in a pound or an hour, using 100 for 1,000, adding or subtracting amounts in different units without changing them first, reading half an hour as 50 minutes, and using the area or half the sides for a perimeter.
Units change only from a bigger unit to a smaller one, as in the unit: kilometers to meters, meters to centimeters, kilograms to grams, liters to milliliters, pounds to ounces, hours to minutes, and minutes to seconds. Parts of a pound or an hour are halves and fourths.
Each station matches a chapter of the Learn page for this unit, which walks through the ideas step by step.
Two Truths and a Lie (Lesson 18) is an optional lesson, so there is no station for it.
