Fraction Equivalence & Comparison

Short lessons you can play with. Shade fraction strips, tap points on number lines, split and group parts to find equivalent fractions, and compare fractions in more than one way, then check yourself.

How it works

Six short chapters follow the unit’s lessons in order. Each step shows one idea with something to tap or move, then a quick check. A wrong answer names the likely mistake and gives one more try. Progress is saved on this device.

Numbers

Denominators are 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, and 12, as in the unit. Fractions are shown as fraction strips (tape diagrams) and on number lines, and equivalent fractions come from splitting or grouping the parts before any rule is named.

Words to know

Numerator: the top number, how many parts. Denominator: the bottom number, how many equal parts make 1 whole. Equivalent fractions: different fractions for the same amount. Benchmark: an easy number to compare to, like 0, 1/2, or 1. Common denominator: the same denominator for two fractions, so they can be compared part for part.

Not covered

Paper Clip Games (Lesson 17) is an optional lesson. Practice it all in Fraction Bakery, the game for this unit.
