Illustrative Mathematics K–5 · Grade 4 · Unit 2 · Fraction Equivalence and Comparison
Welcome to the bakery! Cut pans into equal pieces, measure along the tape, match twin trays, slice and stack the parts, and judge the taste test. Then light the candles at the Big Bake-Off. Each station matches lessons from class.
Each station deals 8 fresh problems (the Big Bake-Off deals 10). A right answer on the first try earns 10 points. After a wrong answer, the game names the likely mistake and gives one more try for 5 points. At the Big Bake-Off, each right answer lights one of the cake’s 10 candles.
Hints use the pictures from class: fraction strips (tape diagrams), number lines with jumps of one part, and strips split or grouped to show equivalent fractions. A used hint caps that problem at 5 points.
Counting the unshaded parts, switching the numerator and denominator, counting tick marks instead of jumps, using two wholes as one whole, thinking a bigger denominator means a bigger fraction, adding the same number to the top and bottom (instead of multiplying), changing only one of the two numbers, and ordering fractions by their numerators or denominators alone.
Denominators are 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, and 12, as in the unit. Typed fraction answers can be written like 3/4 or 1 3/4. Comparisons use the unit’s ways: the same denominator, the same numerator, 1/2 or 1 as a benchmark, or a common denominator up to twelfths.
Each station matches a chapter of the Learn page for this unit, which walks through the ideas step by step.
Paper Clip Games (Lesson 17) is an optional lesson, so there is no station for it.
