Illustrative Mathematics K–5 · Grade 3 · Unit 6 · Measuring Length, Time, Liquid Volume, and Weight
Welcome to the Science Fair, where everything gets measured! Measure to the half and fourth inch in the Measuring Lab, read line plots in the Data Corner, weigh things at the Weigh Station, pour liters at Water Works, keep time at the Clock Tower, and solve stories in the Problem Lab. Then go for the Grand Prize. Each station matches lessons from class.
Each station deals 8 fresh problems (the Grand Prize deals 10). A right answer on the first try earns 10 points. After a wrong answer, the game names the likely mistake and gives one more try for 5 points. In the Grand Prize round, each right answer lights a star on the trophy.
Hints use the pictures from class: rulers marked in halves and fourths of an inch, line plots, scales, containers marked in liters, clocks with the minutes around the edge, number lines of times, and tape diagrams. A used hint caps that problem at 5 points.
Reading only the whole inches, reading the half-inch mark as a fourth, counting every mark as an inch, counting the shorter things instead of the longer ones, reading the small marks on a scale as whole steps, reading the empty part of a container, counting by 5s past the minute hand, reading the hour too soon, subtracting times as if an hour were 100 minutes, counting only part of a time that crosses the hour, using the wrong operation, and stopping after one step of a two-step story.
Lengths are to the nearest half or fourth of an inch. Weights are in grams (up to 1,000) or kilograms, liquid volumes in liters, and times to the minute, with elapsed times under an hour that never cross 12 o’clock. Stories use one unit at a time, with friendly numbers.
Each station matches a chapter of the Learn page for this unit, which walks through the ideas step by step.
Design a Carnival Game (Lesson 16) is an optional lesson, so there’s no station for it.
