Learn · Illustrative Mathematics K–5 · Grade 3 · Unit 5
Short lessons you can play with. Cut shapes into equal parts, build fractions from unit fractions, find fractions on the number line, see which fractions are whole numbers, find equivalent fractions, and compare fractions, then check yourself.
Eight short chapters follow the unit’s lessons in order. Each step shows one idea with something to tap or move, then a quick check. A wrong answer names the likely mistake and gives one more try. Progress is saved on this device.
Denominators are 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8, as in Grade 3. Fractions are parts of one whole and points on number lines up to 3. Comparisons have the same denominator or the same numerator, or are equivalent. There’s no adding or multiplying fractions; that’s Grade 4.
Fraction: a number that names equal parts of a whole, like 3/4. Denominator: the bottom number, how many equal parts make the whole. Numerator: the top number, how many of those parts. Unit fraction: one part, like 1/4. Equivalent fractions: fractions that are the same size, at the same point on the number line, like 1/2 and 2/4.
Design With Fractions (Lesson 18) is an optional lesson. Practice it all in Fraction Farm, the game for this unit.
