Fraction Farm

Welcome to Fraction Farm, where everything gets cut into equal parts! Slice pies at the Pie Stand, plant the Garden Rows, walk the Fence Line, count wholes in the Big Barn, match up the Garden Plots, and judge the Harvest Contest. Then win a blue ribbon at the County Fair. Each station matches lessons from class.

How a round works

Each station deals 8 fresh problems (the County Fair deals 10). A right answer on the first try earns 10 points. After a wrong answer, the game names the likely mistake and gives one more try for 5 points. At the County Fair, each right answer puts an apple in the prize basket.

The "Show me" hint

Hints use the pictures from class: shapes cut into equal parts, fraction strips, and number lines with jumps of one part. A used hint caps that problem at 5 points.

Mistakes it catches

Counting the unshaded parts, switching the top and bottom numbers, counting tick marks instead of jumps, counting from 1 instead of 0, writing the number of parts instead of a fraction, thinking more slices means bigger slices, adding the same number to the top and bottom to make an equivalent fraction, and keeping the top number when the parts change.

Numbers

Denominators are 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8, as in Grade 3. Fractions are parts of one whole, points on number lines up to 3, and whole numbers written as fractions. Comparisons have the same denominator or the same numerator, or are equivalent. Typed fraction answers are written like 3/4; an equivalent fraction counts too.

Learn it first

Each station matches a chapter of the Learn page for this unit, which walks through the ideas step by step.

Not covered

Design With Fractions (Lesson 18) is an optional lesson, so there’s no station for it.
