Year-End Fair

Welcome to the fair! Share pies at the Pie Booth, toss rings with big numbers, ride the Ferris wheel, win at the Prize Tent, and guess the jelly beans. Then light up the sky at the Grand Finale. Each station reviews lessons from class.

How a round works

Each station deals 8 fresh problems (the Grand Finale deals 10). A right answer on the first try earns 10 points. After a wrong answer, the game names the likely mistake and gives one more try for 5 points. At the Grand Finale, each right answer sets off one of 10 fireworks.

The "Show me" hint

Hints use the pictures from the year: fraction strips, the standard algorithm’s first column, the first chunk of partial quotients, and tape diagrams for comparisons. A used hint caps that problem at 5 points.

Mistakes it catches

Adding the denominators, multiplying the denominator along with the numerator, subtracting without trading a whole, adding when the story takes away (and the other way), leaving a 0 out of a quotient, using “more” for “times as many,” using the quotient when a story needs one more, and estimating ten times too big or small.

Numbers

This unit reviews the year with the same limits: like denominators, whole numbers with few nonzero digits, and at most one trade when adding or subtracting.

Learn it first

Each station matches a chapter of the Learn page for this unit, which reviews the ideas step by step.

Not covered

Create Word Problems (Lesson 9), Which One Doesn’t Belong? (Lesson 11), and Number Talk (Lesson 12) are open-ended lessons, best done with others, so there are no stations for them.
