Illustrative Mathematics K–5 · Grade 4 · Unit 3 · Extending Operations to Fractions
Welcome to camp! Scoop snacks at the Snack Shack, pack trail mix, hike and paddle, measure bugs at the Bug Lab, and count coins at the Ranger Station. Then light up the night sky. Each station matches lessons from class.
Each station deals 8 fresh problems (Stargazing deals 10). A right answer on the first try earns 10 points. After a wrong answer, the game names the likely mistake and gives one more try for 5 points. At Stargazing, each right answer lights one of 10 stars.
Hints use the pictures from class: fraction strips in equal groups, jumps on a number line, parts crossed out to subtract, line plots, and hundred grids for tenths and hundredths. A used hint caps that problem at 5 points.
Multiplying the denominator along with the numerator, adding the number of groups to the fraction, adding the denominators, adding when the story takes away, taking the smaller fraction from the larger instead of trading a whole, counting the Xs at a value as more than it, and adding tenths and hundredths as if they were the same size.
Denominators are 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 100, as in the unit. Typed fraction answers can be written like 7/4 or 1 3/4. Equal groups stay within 4 wholes, and mixed numbers within 6.
Each station matches a chapter of the Learn page for this unit, which walks through the ideas step by step.
Flexible with Fractions (Lesson 19) and Sticky Notes (Lesson 20) are optional lessons, so there are no stations for them.
