Tile Town

Welcome to Tile Town, where everything gets covered in squares! Tile floors at the shop, build rectangles on the mosaic wall, pick the right square units, measure garden plots, split rectangles on Split Street, and find the area of rooms with corners cut away. Then finish the mosaic in the Town Square. Each station matches lessons from class.

How a round works

Each station deals 8 fresh problems (the Town Square deals 10). A right answer on the first try earns 10 points. After a wrong answer, the game names the likely mistake and gives one more try for 5 points. In the Town Square, each right answer lays a tile in the mosaic.

The "Show me" hint

Hints use the pictures from class: shapes covered in unit squares, partly tiled rectangles, rectangles with their side lengths, rectangles cut into two parts, and L-shaped figures cut into two rectangles. A used hint caps that problem at 5 points.

Mistakes it catches

Counting the sides around a shape instead of the squares inside, counting only the tiles drawn so far, adding the side lengths instead of multiplying, finding the distance around (perimeter) instead of the area, using square units that are much too big or too small, adding only one part of a figure, counting a big rectangle without taking away the cut corner, and adding where a missing side needs subtracting.

Numbers

Side lengths go up to 10, and every area stays within 100. Areas are in square units, square centimeters, square inches, square feet, or square meters. Rugs, gardens, rooms, and stamps all come in sizes that make sense.

Learn it first

Each station matches a chapter of the Learn page for this unit, which walks through the ideas step by step.

Not covered

Area and the Multiplication Table (Lesson 11) and New Room (Lesson 15) are optional lessons, so there are no stations for them.
