Equal Groups

Short lessons you can play with. Share fairly and make pairs, find odd and even numbers, build arrays in rows and columns, and cut rectangles into squares, then check yourself. Tap Read to me to hear any step read aloud.

How it works

Five short chapters follow the unit’s lessons in order. Each step shows one idea with something to tap or move, then a quick check. A wrong answer names the likely mistake and gives one more try.

Read to me

The Read to me buttons read each step and quick check aloud with the device’s built-in voice, for students still learning to read. Progress is saved on this device.

Numbers

Odd and even numbers are within 20. Arrays have up to 5 rows and 5 columns, so every total is 25 or less and can be found by adding equal addends or counting on.

The big idea

An even number makes pairs, or two equal groups, with none left over: it’s a double, like 7 + 7. An odd number is a double and 1 more. An array has the same number in every row, so its total is a sum of equal addends, by rows or by columns. This is the start of multiplication in Grade 3.

Not covered

Patterns with Even and Odd Numbers (Lesson 5) and the Center Days (Lessons 6 and 13) are optional lessons that work better in class. There’s no practice game for this unit yet.
