Measuring Length

Short lessons you can play with. Measure with cubes and rulers, in centimeters, meters, inches, and feet, solve length stories, and make line plots, then check yourself. Tap Read to me to hear any step read aloud.

How it works

Five short chapters follow the unit’s lessons in order. Each step shows one idea with something to tap or move, then a quick check. A wrong answer names the likely mistake and gives one more try.

Read to me

The Read to me buttons read each step and quick check aloud with the device’s built-in voice, for students still learning to read. Progress is saved on this device.

Numbers

Lengths are whole centimeters, inches, feet, and meters, all within 100, and things are drawn at real-life sizes (a crayon is about 9 cm). Differences need at most one broken ten.

Try it for real

Measuring real things is the heart of this unit. A ruler, a tape measure, and a few household objects are all it takes.

Not covered

Center Days (Lessons 7, 13, and 17) and Make a Yard Stick (Lesson 18) are hands-on, optional lessons that work better in class. There’s no practice game for this unit yet.
